ইংরেজি লেখাকে নির্ভুল করতে ৫ টি কমন ভুল শোধরানোর উপায়

ইংরেজিতে কোন কিছু লিখতে গেছেন আর Grammar নিয়ে Confusion এ পড়েন নি, এমন লোক খুঁজে পাওয়া যাবে না। ইংরেজি যেহেতু আমাদের মাতৃভাষা নয়, তাই এটা নিয়ে দ্বিধাদ্বন্দ্ব থাকবেই। কিন্তু ভালো ইংরেজি লিখতে গেলে এই ভুল থেকে বের হয়ে আসতেই হবে। Grammatical Error অনেক রকমেরই হতে পারে। সেগুলো থেকে ৫ টি খুবই Common এবং একইসাথে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ Error নিয়ে আজকে আলোচনা করবো।

তো সেই ভুলগুলো কি কি? আসুন, জেনে নেওয়া যাক।

ভুল #১: Run-on Sentence or Comma Splice

Run-on Sentence হলো এমন Sentence যা দুইটি Different Clause কে কোন Punctuation অথবা Appropriate Preposition ছাড়াই যুক্ত করে। আর Comma Splice হচ্ছে তা Comma এর মাধ্যমে দুইটি Different Clause কে যুক্ত করে। কিন্তু তাদের মধ্যে কোন Appropriate Conjunction থাকে না।

নিম্নোক্ত ৫ ভাবে আপনারা Run-on Sentence এবং Comma Splice কে Fixing করতে পারবেন-

• Separate the clauses into two sentences.

• Replace the comma with a semi-colon.

• Replace the comma with a coordinating conjunction–and, but, for, yet, nor, so.

• Replace the comma with a subordinating conjunction–after, although, before, unless, as, because, even though, if, since, until, when, while.

• Replace the comma with a semi-colon and transitional word–however, moreover, on the other hand, nevertheless, instead, also, therefore, consequently, otherwise, as a result.

For example:

• Incorrect: Rachel is very smart, she began reading when she was three years old.

• Correct: Rachel is very smart. She began reading when she was three years old.

• Correct: Rachel is very smart; she began reading when she was three years old.

• Correct: Rachel is very smart, and she began reading when she was three years old.

• Correct: Because Rachel is very smart, she began reading when she was three years old.

• Correct: Rachel is very smart; as a result, she began reading when she was three years old.

ভুল #২: Pronoun Errors

Noun যদি Singular হয়, Pronoun ও Singular হবে। আবার Noun যদি Plural হয়, Pronoun ও Plural হবে।

For example:

• Incorrect: Everybody must bring their own lunch.

• Correct: Everybody must bring his or her own lunch.

ভুল #৩: Mistakes in Apostrophe Usage

খুবই Common একটি ভুল। প্রায় সবারই এই ভুল কোন না কোন সময় হয়েছেই। কিন্তু এই ভুলেরও প্রতিষেধক রয়েছে। আর তা করতে হবে এইভাবে-

You do not use an apostrophe after a possessive pronoun such as my, mine, our, ours, his, hers, its, their, or theirs.

For example:

• Incorrect: My mothers cabin is next to his’ cabin.

• Correct: My mother’s cabin is next to his cabin.

In the case of it’s, the apostrophe is used to indicate a contraction for it is. For example:

• Incorrect: Its a cold day in October.

• Correct: It’s a cold day in October

ভুল #৪: Lack of Subject/Verb Agreement

Present Tense এ লেখা বা কথা বলার সময় Subject এবং Verb যেন Agree করে, সেইদিকে খেয়াল রাখতে হবে। Subject যদি Singular হয়, Verb ও Singular হবে। Plural এর ক্ষেত্রেও একই কথা প্রযোজ্য।

For example:

• Incorrect: The recipes is good for beginning chefs.

• Correct: The recipes are good for beginning chefs.

ভুল #৫: Misplaced Modifiers

অনেক সময় Sentence এ Modifier ব্যবহার করতে হয়। কিন্তু সেই ব্যবহারটা হতে হবে যথাযথ, যাতে Specific কোন Word কে Modify করা হচ্ছে তা বোঝা যায়।

• Incorrect: At eight years old, my father gave me a pony for Christmas.

• Correct: When I was eight years old, my father gave me a pony for Christmas.
